What is the TI-83 Calculator?

The Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus is one of the most popular graphing calculators in US schools. Released in 1999, it has been used by millions of students for algebra, precalculus, statistics, and AP exams. While the physical device costs $80–100, our free online simulator gives you the same functionality at no cost, in your browser.

The TI-83 Plus runs on a Z80 processor with 24 KB of RAM and 160 KB of Flash ROM. Its 96×64 monochrome screen, while modest by modern standards, is more than enough for graphing functions, viewing tables, and running TI-BASIC programs. Because the operating system is shared with the TI-84 Plus, every program written for the TI-83 still works on the TI-84 — and on our simulator.

TI-83 Plus vs TI-84 Plus: What's the Difference?

The TI-84 Plus is essentially an upgraded TI-83 Plus with more memory, USB connectivity, and additional pre-loaded apps. Both calculators share the same operating system architecture and most TI-BASIC programs are compatible between them. Here is a side-by-side comparison:

How to Use the TI-83 Online Calculator

  1. Click inside the calculator screen above to give it focus, so your keyboard inputs register.
  2. Type or click the buttons just like you would on a physical TI-83 — press Y= to enter functions or use the home screen for direct calculations.
  3. Press GRAPH or ENTER to see results. Use ZOOM 6 (ZStandard) if your graph appears off-screen.

TI-83 Functions Available Online

  • Function graphing with up to 10 simultaneous equations
  • Tables of values with adjustable step size
  • Statistics: 1-Var Stats, 2-Var Stats, regression analysis
  • Matrices up to 99×99 with multiplication, determinants, inverses
  • TI-BASIC programs and subroutines
  • Algebra: numeric solver, polynomial root finder
  • Trigonometry, logarithms, exponentials
  • Probability functions and distributions

Is the TI-83 Allowed on the SAT?

Yes, the TI-83 Plus is on the College Board's approved calculator list for SAT and AP exams. The ACT also permits it. Our online version gives you the same functionality for practice. However, when taking the actual exam in person, you must bring a physical approved calculator — online simulators are not currently allowed in standardized test centers.

TI-83 Calculator Tips for Students

  1. Always check your MODE first. Many wrong answers on tests come from being in radian mode when degree mode is needed (or vice versa). Press MODE to verify before you start.
  2. Use ZOOM 6 to reset the window. If your graph looks blank, you probably zoomed in too far. ZStandard returns the view to −10 ≤ x, y ≤ 10.
  3. Save data to lists. When solving statistics problems, type your data into L1 and L2 once and use it across multiple calculations — much faster than re-entering.
  4. Learn the catalog (2nd → 0). Every function on the TI-83 lives in the catalog. If you can't find a command in the menus, it's there alphabetically.
  5. Press 2nd → ENTER to recall. The previous calculation appears on the entry line for quick edits — perfect for "try a slightly different value" experiments.
